Innovation Incubator: UM-Flint’s Pinnacle of Creativity

On the second floor of the Northbank Center, ideas have been shared, businesses have been started, and networking opportunities have been given at the Innovation Incubator.

The Innovation Incubator, also known as “[IN],” is a creative space open to entrepreneurs, creators, students with big dreams, and anyone with an economic idea. [IN] is a University Outreach program funded by the UM-Flint’s Office of Provost, School of Management, and the College of Arts and Sciences. [IN] is in a co-working space. A co-working space is an area where you can meet clients, brainstorm, or work during normal business hours.

[IN] is essentially a space to concentrate on a task without the interruptions or distractions of home. All services at the [IN] are free of cost with white boards, projection screens, and a flat-screen TV with access to Skype if you have to make conference calls. The space has the same qualities of a library, coffee shop, or your most convenient spot, but for no fee.

I talked with the Innovation Incubator Program Director, Paula Nas, discussing the significance of this co-working and creative space.

“The Incubator is very significant for creators and people wanting to start something in Flint. Our job is to help people reach their goals and offer them a space to do it,” said Nas.

The staff at the [IN] help local residents establish businesses, non-profits, and free workshops are held periodically. It doesn’t matter if you’re a student, community member, or faculty–you are welcome to create and innovate. Along with the co-working space on the second floor of the Northbank Center, there is also one on the second floor of The Ferris Wheel building, which is also free to everyone.

“There is something special when you know you can help support someone’s ideas by giving the resources and space to conduct new ideas and creativity. We want to help,” said Nas.

The Innovation Incubator in the Northbank Center is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  and Friday at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information call (810) 424-5486.
