Looking for some fun and entertainment now that classes are ending? The Ruth Mott Foundation and Applewood Estate will be hosting their Bring Your Lunch & Learn monthly series at noon on the first Friday of the month from May to October.

In May, the first in the series will be “Journaling: What’s Your Story?” Not only for writers, journaling is a great way to explore the inner you. For those interested in the more physical entertainments, “Physical Fitness at Applewood” will be held in June. In July, explore the artistic impulse with “Art at Applewood.”

Stepping into August, it is time to stop and smell the roses with “Floral Design Applewood Style.” Then in September, learn to keep the past intact with “Preserving Memories: How to Care for Photographs.” The series will conclude with “Canning Fruits & Veggies 101” in October.

Applewood Estate is the family home of Charles Stewart Mott, whose links to the city include his career not only as an industrialist but a philanthropist. Built in 1916, free tours are available as well as admission and parking.

Come and see how one of the movers and shakers of the area lived–in the guided house tours, you’ll get to travel through all three levels of the mansion.

Exhibits in the garage, the barn, and yes, the chicken coop provides the visitor an opportunity to explore the history of a family that helped to make Flint what it is today.

Walking garden tours are also available. These last an hour and take visitors to dozens of highlights throughout the artfully tended, colorful gardens and grounds, including the historic apple orchard for which the estate is named, the beehives, gatehouse, barn, rose garden, a demonstration garden, perennial garden, friendly frog and much more.

Other upcoming events on the 2019 Calendar include “Wet Paint Day” on July 13, “Savor the Summer” on July 25, the Fall Harvest Festival on September 28 and “Halloween in the Gardens” on October 26-27.

So, come enjoy, learn and have a good ol’ time. Applewood Estate is located at 1400 E. Kearsley Street in Flint. It is free to get in and the estate is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday through Sunday until October. For further information visit the Mott Foundation website.
