The Davenport University Panthers took a bite from the UM-Flint hockey team on Saturday, Oct. 5. The 6-1 defeat dropped the Wolverines to a 1-3 record. 

The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the first period and did not look back. Brian Knack scored the lone Wolverine goal at 1:01 of the second period.

“They got some quick goals off us on the power play,” said UM-Flint Junior Ian Crampton. “We started out looking tired and laggard and they jumped on us.”

The Linden native stressed the need to become more tightly knit. However, Coach Mike Schunot feels the team will rebound as the season proceeds.

“We are a young squad–that is good and bad. They are driven to succeed badly but lack experience. We have enough veteran leadership that will show them the ropes. The losses do not affect our playoff positioning.

“This year we have the potential to gel into a very good team. The night before the 6-1 loss we let one slip away. We battled back but just couldn’t get an equalizer and lost 5-4,” said Schunot.

The event will be held at Crystal Fieldhouse, located in Burton. Ticket prices are $5 for general admission. For fans 6 to 12 years of age, seniors 62 years and up and students and faculty the price is $3. Admission is free for children five and under.
