Wolverines Drop to Lawrence at the Rink
November 5, 2019
UM-Flint fell victim to penalties as Lawrence Tech edged the maize and blue, 6-4 on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Blue Devils converted two power plays in the third period to secure the victory. The loss dropped the UM-Flint record to 1-5-2.
“The team took too many penalties,” said Wolverines Assistant Coach Mark Look. “We started off pretty well but let the game get away from us. The team can play better. We know exactly what we need to do to win but must execute.”
The first goal was tallied by Lawrence Tech midway through the first period. UM-Flint’s Trevor Cope tied the game at 16:42 of the opening stanza. Matthew Daniels added an assist.
Lawrence Tech regained the lead nearly five minutes into the second period, but UM-Flint roared back midway through the period on two goals by Daniels. The scores, three minutes apart, drew assists on both by Stefano Schippono and Cope, to provide the Wolverines a 3-2 advantage.
“On the first goal Stefano put a shot on net and I was able to pop the rebound in,” said Daniels. “The second goal was much the same as Stefano fired the puck at the goalie and I was able to tip the puck in.”
At 14:24 Lawrence drew even, then the red light flashed back and forth as UM-Flint regained the lead on an unassisted score by Cope two minutes later. Two minutes ticked off the clock when the Blue Devils notched the match back up at four.
In a penalty filled third period Lawrence converted twice on powerplays to ultimately take home the victory. UM-Flint was unable to convert on a two-man advantage midway through the period. In those twenty minutes, seven penalties were called, four on UM-Flint and three on Lawrence Tech, the last three journeys to the sin bin by players bearing the “M” on their chest.
“We need to buckle down and bury the chances we’re getting,” said Daniels, a junior carrying a major in mechanical engineering. “The team overall is playing pretty good together and making the best with what we got.”
