Recap of Student Government’s General Assembly for Wednesday, Oct. 21

In the Student Government General Assembly meeting that took place on Oct. 21, the outcome of last Saturday’s Day of Action was discussed, and details about the upcoming State of the Student address were announced.

SG President Samantha Uptmor first thanked everyone involved in the Day of Action that occurred on Oct. 17. During this event, over 100 student volunteers delivered booklets filled with voting information to approximately 9,850 homes in Flint.

The City of Flint’s historically low voter turnout rates, according to Director of Foreign Outreach Levi Todd, were a big motivator for this event.

Uptmor and SG Vice President, Carl Grolle, encouraged students to tune into the State of the Student address on Monday, Oct. 26 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The annual speech will feature SG’s plans for helping students cope with virtual learning as the semester progresses.

It will proceed via Zoom, and include words from Chancellor Dutta, a speech from Uptmor, and an open Q&A forum. Anyone interested can find the registration links on SG’s social media pages or sign up here

Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Omar Elnour, shared his work on bringing a virtual tutoring program to UM-Flint. Students at the university would use this program to tutor K-12 students in their community.

During her report, Senator Wang discussed stress management sessions that are taking place through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). The first session took place on Oct. 21, and the second is set for Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.

These sessions are designed to aid students who are feeling “stressed, fried, frazzled, and done.” The link can be found on SG’s social media pages or can be accessed directly by clicking here.

Uptmor and other SG members reminded students to register to vote if they haven’t already and to show up for Election Day on Nov. 3.

With no bills presented, the meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. SG’s General Assembly meetings take place every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Students who’d like to tune in can do so by visiting SG’s webpage or clicking here
