Letter from the editor
The State of the Newspaper
Hello all! My name is Eleni Batsios, and I am the Editor in Chief for The Michigan Times, the student-run newspaper.
I wanted to introduce myself and share a bit more about my experiences here on campus. I’ve been studying Communications at UM-Flint for three years now, and I’ve loved every second of it. I’ve loved meeting all of my Communications peers and the great professors over in the Department of Language & Communication. I’ve worked in the library for two years and even worked at the Marketing and Communications Office for a bit. Needless to say, I’ve been around campus.
This all being said, becoming the editor-in-chief for the MTimes was a whole new adventure for me. I’ve never had this amount of responsibility or even taken a journalism class, but I dedicated myself to learning as much as I could before publishing this first edition. The writers for the MTimes and myself have worked extremely hard at putting this together. Four months ago, the paper didn’t exist. The MTimes was one of the many organizations that fell apart due to the pandemic, and the administrators have entrusted me with getting it back on its feet. This is not a responsibility I take lightly. I have a very clear vision of what I want this paper to be and achieve: the MTimes should report on campus matters in order to unite the students of UM-Flint. I made sure the writers I hired shared this same vision and truly cared about our campus. I hope our stories reflect this vision, and I can’t wait to make this newspaper reach its full potential.
