Genesee County expects applications for key boards overseeing parks, airport operations, and opioid settlement funding

Genesee County, Michigan – The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is asking residents to come forward and help shape the county’s future. They are announcing new openings on three important boards that affect public health, transportation, and recreation. The Board verified that there are now open positions on the Parks & Recreation Commission, the Bishop Airport Authority, and the Opioid Settlement Steering Committee. They encouraged suitable community members to apply.

County officials said that the Parks & Recreation Commission has four available seats. This gives citizens an opportunity to help decide how local amenities, public green areas, and community programming will be run in the future. There are also two openings on the Bishop Airport Authority, which is in charge of managing operations and long-term planning for Flint’s regional airport. There are also eleven open positions on the Opioid Settlement Steering Committee, which decides how to use settlement money to help with opioid-related problems in the community.

“These appointments are critical to the continued progress and development of Genesee County,” said Commissioner Shaun Shumaker, Chairman of the Board’s Appointments Committee. “Our residents deserve to have the highest-caliber representatives in these positions to ensure their values and priorities are well represented.”

There are a number of standards that applicants must meet. To be eligible, candidates must be U.S. citizens, registered voters, and have lived in Genesee County for at least a year. They also need to be in good standing with the county. Anyone who has been convicted of fraud, deceit, or dishonesty or who owes money in fines, fees, or taxes will not be accepted.

The Board said that residents can now apply up to a year before the end of a current term to give them more options. People who are interested should utilize the online application forms, but they can also send in their applications by mail to the Board of Commissioners’ office in Flint. All applications must be in by midnight on December 12, 2025.

Applicants must send in a résumé, a letter of interest, and answers to a few questions about their motivation, relevant experience, personal beliefs about diversity and inclusion, and any possible limits on their capacity to serve. The Board also wants candidates to show that they understand the county’s values and priorities.
