Genesee County, Michigan – Federal funding can move slowly. In Genesee County, however, millions of dollars intended for neighborhoods and community services are not being left waiting on the sidelines.
The county’s Metropolitan Planning Commission has earned recognition from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for meeting federal spending deadlines for five consecutive years, a record officials say reflects careful planning and strong oversight of public money.
HUD recognized the commission for the timely expenditure of Community Development Block Grant funds, commonly known as CDBG funding. The federal program supports local projects and services designed primarily to benefit low- and moderate-income residents.
Communities receiving CDBG money must meet HUD standards governing how quickly those funds are committed and spent. Consistently meeting those requirements shows that federal dollars are being managed efficiently and directed toward approved local needs without unnecessary delays.
Genesee County distributes the funding to cities, villages and townships across the county. The money helps support a broad mix of programs, including employment training, assistance for abused and neglected children, local food banks, youth programs and services for senior residents.
CDBG investments can also be used for housing initiatives, public infrastructure, neighborhood improvements and other community development projects. Spending the funds on schedule allows those efforts to move forward sooner, placing resources into communities where they can produce a direct and measurable benefit.
Reaching HUD’s timeliness standard once requires coordination. Maintaining that performance for five straight years points to a longer pattern of financial discipline and cooperation among county staff, municipal governments and project partners.
The Genesee County Board of Commissioners said the recognition demonstrates the county’s commitment to responsible stewardship of federal resources. The board also credited the Metropolitan Planning Commission’s staff for working with local communities to identify needs, administer funding and keep projects moving.
Commissioners specifically praised the Planning team under the leadership of Derek Bradshaw, recognizing its continued work to ensure federal dollars are used effectively.
The five-year milestone is more than an administrative achievement. It means funding intended for housing, infrastructure and essential community services is reaching local projects on time, helping Genesee County turn federal support into visible improvements for residents across the county.
