Flint, Michigan – Planning for the future can feel distant until a family is suddenly faced with legal paperwork, property questions or difficult decisions after a loved one dies. Flint officials are hoping to make those conversations easier before they become urgent.
A new three-part Lunch & Learn series will give residents a chance to better understand probate, wills, powers of attorney and other basic estate-planning tools in a setting designed to keep the information practical and easy to follow.
The City of Flint Office of Public Health is partnering with attorney Ashley Prew, Esq. for the free educational program, called “Taking Care of Tomorrow, Today.” The sessions will focus on what probate is, how the process can affect families and what steps residents may be able to take in advance to simplify matters later.

Organizers say participants will also learn about ways to potentially avoid probate, along with the role of wills and powers of attorney. Those legal tools can help people clearly document their wishes, protect assets and reduce the time, cost and confusion relatives may face when handling an estate.
“I’m excited to continue our partnership with the City of Flint to help residents better understand probate and how it can impact their families,” said Ashley Prew, Esq.
“Our goal is to give residents the knowledge they need to plan ahead, protect their assets and save their loved ones time, money and confusion.”
The series begins Thursday, September 17, 2026, with two additional sessions scheduled for Thursday, October 1, and Thursday, October 15.
Each Lunch & Learn will run from noon to 1 p.m. at Mays Senior & Community Center, located at 1002 W. Home Ave. in Flint.
The three-session format gives residents several opportunities to learn about topics that can otherwise seem complicated or intimidating. Rather than waiting until a legal issue appears, the program is centered on preparation, understanding available options, putting important decisions in writing and knowing what documents may help families avoid unnecessary uncertainty.
With all three sessions offered free of charge, the series provides Flint residents with direct access to information that could help them make more informed decisions about their property, finances and wishes for the future.
