Genesee County opens three public service positions with November application deadlines

Genesee County, Michigan – Some of the decisions that shape daily life in Genesee County happen far from public attention. They involve access to healthcare, support for families facing difficult circumstances, and transportation services that help residents get where they need to go.

Now, local residents have an opportunity to take part in those decisions. Three positions are opening on two county boards, and officials are encouraging qualified community members to apply before the November deadlines.

The Genesee County Board of Commissioners has announced vacancies on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Board and the Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) Board. The openings give eligible residents a chance to participate in local public service and contribute their knowledge and experience to organizations that play important roles across the county.

Two of the available positions are on the MDHHS Board, while the third is on the MTA Board. Although the two organizations have different responsibilities, both serve residents who depend on essential community services.

Commissioner Shaun Shumaker, who chairs the Board of Commissioners’ Appointments Committee, emphasized the importance of selecting individuals who can represent the community effectively.

“These appointments are critical to the continued progress and development of Genesee County,” Shumaker said.

“Our residents deserve to have the highest-caliber representatives in these positions to ensure their values and priorities are well represented.”

The two MDHHS Board vacancies come with three-year terms, both scheduled to expire on September 27, 2029. Interested residents have until November 18, 2026, to submit their applications.

The board plays a role in supporting the delivery of health and human services throughout Genesee County. Its work is particularly important for vulnerable individuals and families who rely on assistance and coordinated support.

Another responsibility involves helping connect state and local efforts to address community needs. Through that work, board members contribute to discussions about how essential services can better serve the people who need them.

Residents interested in either of these positions can find additional details and application instructions through the Genesee County MDHHS Board vacancy announcement.

The third opening involves a different but equally important area of daily life: public transportation.

The Mass Transportation Authority provides transportation services across Genesee County, helping connect residents with jobs, schools, medical appointments, and other important destinations.

Its governing board helps oversee the agency’s policies, operations, and long-term direction. Decisions in these areas can influence how transportation services meet the needs of people throughout the community.

One position is currently available on the MTA Board. The appointment carries a four-year term ending March 31, 2030.

The deadline for this vacancy is November 15, 2026, three days earlier than the deadline for the MDHHS Board openings. Additional information is available in the Mass Transportation Authority Board appointment announcement.

Not everyone is eligible to apply. Candidates must be United States citizens, registered voters, and residents of Genesee County for at least one year. Other qualifications may apply depending on the particular board.

The application process requires a letter of interest, a résumé, and answers to questions included in the individual vacancy announcements. County officials encourage applicants to submit their materials online.

The Board of Commissioners is seeking residents from varied professional and personal backgrounds who are interested in contributing to public service.

With both deadlines approaching in November, eligible residents have several weeks to review the requirements and prepare their applications. The three appointments offer an opportunity to help guide services that affect families, commuters, and other members of the Genesee County community.
