Genesee County Board of Commissioners calls for civic-minded applicants to help guide key local institutions

Genesee County, Michigan – The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is actively looking for residents who want to serve their community to apply. There are now several crucial seats open on the boards of the Genesee Health System and the Genesee County Land Bank. The county hopes to attract people who are dedicated to public service and local progress to apply by offering terms that are both short and long.

There are four available seats on the Genesee Health System Board for general members. The terms will last until March 2028. There is also one partial-term opportunity for a primary consumer representative that will end in March 2026. In the meanwhile, the Genesee County Land Bank is trying to fill two vital jobs.

One is for a City of Flint resident and will last until September 2028. The other is for someone who resides outside the City of Flint, or an out-county person, and will last until September 2027.

“These appointments are critical to the continued progress and development of Genesee County,” said Commissioner Shaun Shumaker, Chairman of the Board’s Appointments Committee. “Our residents deserve to have the highest-caliber representatives in these positions to ensure their values and priorities are well represented.”

Candidates must be U.S. citizens, registered voters, and have lived in Genesee County for at least a year to be considered. People who have been convicted of deceit, fraud, or dishonesty in the past, or who are behind on their county fines, fees, or taxes, will not be considered. The Board emphasizes that applicants must be able to show that they have the right talents and are very dedicated to serving the public.

People in the community who are interested can fill out the county’s official forms online. If you don’t have internet access, you can also send your application to the Board of Commissioners’ office at 1101 Beach St., Room 312, Flint, MI 48502. You have until June 30, 2025, to apply.

People who want to apply must answer a number of questions in their applications. These questions include why they want to serve, what relevant experience they have, what unique value they can bring, any potential barriers to participation, their views on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and their understanding of the Board’s priorities.

If residents are interested in future opportunities, they should apply up to a year before their term ends. The Board of Commissioners aims to welcome new members who are eager to help shape Genesee County’s health and land use policies in a meaningful way.
