Genesee County seeks applicants for Road Commission and Library Board seats

Genesee County, Michigan – Residents encouraged to apply before October 15 to help shape local infrastructure and community services

The Genesee County Board of Commissioners is inviting residents to apply for key leadership roles in two important local boards, offering a unique chance for civic-minded individuals to contribute directly to the county’s ongoing development. The open positions include one seat on the Genesee County Road Commission and two seats on the Genesee District Library Board, with application submissions open until October 15, 2025.

“These appointments are critical to the continued progress and development of Genesee County,” said Commissioner Shaun Shumaker, Chairman of the Board’s Appointments Committee. “Our residents deserve to have the highest-caliber representatives in these positions to ensure their values and priorities are well represented.”

Eligibility and Application Details

The available Road Commission seat carries a term expiring on December 31, 2027, while the two library board seats will run through August 31, 2029. According to the Board, the application process is designed to ensure that only qualified, committed individuals are selected for these influential roles.

To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens, registered voters, and have lived in Genesee County for at least one year. Individuals with past convictions for crimes involving “deceit, fraud, or dishonesty” or who are delinquent on taxes, fees, or fines owed to the county will not be considered.

The Board has emphasized the importance of a transparent and merit-based review process. “The Board will conduct a thorough review process to ensure that prospective appointees have the requisite skills to add value in their respective roles,” the official statement reads.

As part of a recent policy shift, individuals may now apply up to one year in advance of a position’s term expiration, allowing greater flexibility and preparation for those interested in public service.

How to Apply

Applications are encouraged to be submitted online through the Board of Commissioners’ digital form. For those without internet access, applications can be mailed to the Board of Commissioners’ Office at 324 S. Saginaw St., 10th Floor, Flint, MI 48502.

Prospective candidates must submit a letter of interest and a résumé, along with answers to a series of questions aimed at evaluating their readiness to serve, including:

  • “Why are you interested in serving on this board/commission?”

  • “What experience do you have that is related to the work of this board/commission?”

  • “How can you add value to this board/commission?”

  • “What factors in your life might limit your ability to serve?”

  • “What is your philosophy about diversity, equity, and inclusion?”

  • “Do you understand the Board of County Commissioners’ priorities and values?”

The Genesee County Board of Commissioners looks forward to reviewing applications and bringing new voices into leadership roles that help guide everything from community library programming to road infrastructure improvements.
