Genesee Health Plan, Huntington Bank providing free financial literacy classes

Flint, Michigan – For the second year in a row, Genesee Health Plan is teaming up with Huntington Banks to offer two free reading and writing classes to people living in Genesee County.

The Genesee Health Plan’s emPOWER Genesee Program helps people and families in Genesee County by providing help with their utility bills and financial advice, helping them sign up for health care, and connecting them with other local support.

Genesee County locals can join one of two classes:

  • A class on how to recover from holiday spending on Thursday, February 8th at noon.
  • A class on how to manage your debts on Thursday, February 15th at noon.

“We are delighted to work with Huntington again this year to provide these financial literacy classes,” said GHP President and CEO Jim Milanowski. “We had overwhelming interest and attendance during last year’s classes, averaging about 25 attendees.” “Participants were engaged in the class topics; we hope that we can have more community members participate this year.”

The classes are scheduled for noon at the GHP office, which is at 2171 S. Linden Road, Flint. Attendees will get lunch and have the chance to enter a gift card giveaway at each session. Those who go to both classes can enter to win a $100 gift card.

“Huntington Bank is proud to continue our partnership with GHP in providing financial education classes and resources for community members,” said Huntington Bank’s Flint Market President, Greg Viener. “Our goal is to equip and empower people with the information and resources needed to make sound financial decisions, because financial health is linked to overall well-being.”

The Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) is also helping out by offering rides to and from the classes for those who need it. People who need a ride can sign up online at www.geneseehealthplan.org or call GHP at 844-232-7740.

The emPOWER Genesee Program started in November 2019 at the Consumers Energy Payment Center in Flint. Its goal is to help people paying their bills find help with utilities, health care, money matters, and other local support. A Community Navigator has helped over 2,000 people with things like emergency relief applications and pointing them to local and state emergency help since the program began.
