Voices for Children honors Judge Jennie Barkey for lifting up Genesee County children and families

Genesee County, Michigan – Recognition often says as much about a community as it does about the person being honored. In Genesee County, the 2026 Impact Award from Voices for Children Advocacy Center shines a light not only on Judge Jennie Barkey’s work, but also on the quiet, steady role the Probate Court plays in the lives of children and families facing difficult moments.

Judge Barkey received the 2026 Impact Award at the organization’s 31st Annual Children’s Champion Awards Breakfast, presented by United Way of Genesee County.

The honor is reserved for an individual whose work leaves a lasting and meaningful mark on the lives of children in the county. In announcing the recognition, Voices for Children pointed to Barkey’s commitment to justice, her visible presence in the community, and the genuine care she shows to the people who come before her court.

“Judge Barkey, we are honored to call you a Children’s Champion.”

That statement captures the spirit of the award.

It is not simply about professional duty or a title on the bench. It reflects the kind of public service that can be felt beyond the courtroom walls, especially when the people affected are children and families navigating uncertainty, vulnerability, and major life changes.

Each year, the Children’s Champion Awards Breakfast recognizes individuals and organizations that are making a positive difference across Genesee County.

Barkey’s selection places a clear focus on the importance of Probate Court, an institution that often works in the background but touches some of the most sensitive areas of family life. Her recognition underscores how meaningful that work can be when it is carried out with consistency, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility.

The Genesee County Probate Court has served county residents since 1836. Its jurisdiction includes deceased estates, wills, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, protective proceedings, and petitions for mental health treatment. The court is located on the fifth floor of the historic Genesee County Courthouse in Flint, a setting that connects today’s cases with nearly two centuries of public service.

This latest honor places Judge Barkey within a larger tradition of advocacy for children and support for families. It also serves as a reminder that lasting change is not always loud. Sometimes it happens through daily decisions, careful listening, and a commitment to treating people with dignity when they need it most.
