Flint resumes yard waste collection as spring season brings renewed focus on clean neighborhoods

Flint, Michigan – With the arrival of April, Flint is stepping into a familiar seasonal rhythm as yard waste collection resumes across the city.

Beginning April 1, residents will once again see weekly curbside pickup dedicated to clearing away the natural debris that comes with warmer weather, a routine effort aimed at keeping neighborhoods tidy and environmentally sound through the months ahead.

The program, known locally as “Bag It!”, encourages residents to gather common yard materials such as grass clippings, leaves, and small branches and place them out for collection on their regular service day.

Unlike standard trash, these items are collected separately, requiring residents to set them at the curb by 7:00 a.m. and position them at least 10 feet away from household waste carts to ensure a smooth pickup process.

City officials are framing the effort as more than just routine maintenance. It is being presented as a shared responsibility, one that reflects the broader momentum Flint continues to build.

Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley pointed to the importance of collective action, emphasizing that small, consistent steps like proper yard waste disposal can contribute to a stronger, cleaner city overall.

“Keeping Flint clean takes all of us working together,” said Mayor Neeley.

“Through prayer, planning and partnership, we are continuing to move our city forward. The Bag It! Program is a simple but powerful way for residents to take pride in their neighborhoods, protect our environment, and help ensure Flint is prepared for the seasons ahead.”

To make participation easier, the city is offering free yard waste bags at three distribution points: Flint City Hall, the Mays Senior & Community Center, and the McKinley Community Center. Residents can pick up to three bags per visit, with a limit of two visits per household while supplies last, providing a helpful boost as the season gets underway.

The collection period will extend through November 30, giving residents ample time to manage yard upkeep as the landscape shifts from spring growth to fall cleanup.

Alongside this service, the city is reminding residents to avoid pushing leaves or debris into streets or storm drains, noting that such actions can lead to clogged systems, localized flooding, and environmental concerns. Violations may lead to citations.
