Flint prepares to celebrate hometown basketball champion Trey McKenney with Trey Day, today, May 14

Flint, Michigan – Flint is preparing to pause and cheer for one of its own as Trey McKenney, a hometown basketball standout now wearing maize and blue, is honored during “Trey Day” on May 14.

The public celebration will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Riverfront Conference Center, where University of Michigan-Flint staff will join Flint Mayor Sheldon Neely, Explore Flint & Genesee representatives, McKenney and his family for a community event recognizing his rise from Flint to the national college basketball spotlight.

Doors open at 3 p.m., and guests will receive a free commemorative T-shirt while supplies last.

McKenney, a shooting guard for the University of Michigan, helped the Wolverines capture the 2026 NCAA National Championship during his first year with the team. His strong play also earned him Big Ten All-Freshman honors, adding another achievement to a basketball journey that began in a city known for producing major talent.

Flint’s basketball history already includes names such as Glenn Rice, Morris Peterson, JaVale McGee and Kyle Kuzma. McKenney’s success now adds a new chapter to that tradition, giving local leaders another reason to point to Flint as a city where toughness, skill and pride continue to shape athletes who reach the national stage.

“Trey McKenney’s rise to a national champion is a source of real pride for Flint and a powerful reminder of what this community produces,” said University of Michigan-Flint Chancellor Laurence B. Alexander.

“Flint has always been defined by resilience, determination, and heart, and Trey carried those qualities with him throughout the season and onto the national stage. We’re honored to join our partners in celebrating his success and what it represents for this city.”

Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley also praised McKenney as an example for young people across Flint.

“Trey McKenney is Flint Strong. His journey from our city to a national championship stage is proof that greatness lives here,” Neeley said.

“We are proud to celebrate him as both a champion and a role model for our youth.”

Before joining Michigan, McKenney built an impressive high school résumé. He represented the United States National Team, won a gold medal at the 2024 FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup, was named Mr. Basketball of Michigan and became a McDonald’s All-American in 2025.

“We are always proud to see amazing talent come out of Flint & Genesee,” said Amari Steward, executive director of Explore Flint & Genesee.

“Trey McKenney is a star in his own right, but is also proving what we’ve always known — Flint is a sports town!”

Trey Day will give Flint residents a chance to celebrate not only a championship season, but also a young athlete whose success continues to reflect the city that helped shape him.
