Community meetings give Flint neighborhoods a voice in park improvements

Flint, Michigan – Flint residents are being invited to help shape the next chapter for the city’s parks, playgrounds and shared outdoor spaces, with a new round of community meetings planned across several neighborhoods.

The City of Flint and the Mott Foundation are encouraging the public to take part in a series of Parks Input community meetings designed to gather ideas directly from residents. The goal is simple but important: hear what people want, what they believe is missing, and how local parks can better serve families, children, seniors and neighborhoods across Flint.

These sessions are meant to be interactive, giving residents a chance to speak openly about the future of parks near their homes and throughout the city. Feedback collected during the meetings will help guide future improvements, programming and investments in Flint’s parks and recreational areas.

City officials say public participation is a key part of the process because parks are more than open land. They are places where children play, families gather, neighbors meet and communities build stronger connections. By listening to residents, Flint leaders hope future park plans will reflect real community needs and local priorities.

All meetings are open to the public, and residents may attend whichever location is most convenient for them. Most sessions will run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with alternate times noted for select dates.

The schedule begins Monday, May 11, at Hasselbring Park / Mays Center, followed by Tuesday, May 12, at Basset Park. Additional meetings are planned for Thursday, May 14, at Kearsley Park; Friday, May 15, at Longway Park; Monday, May 25, at Durant Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday, May 26, at Brennan Park; Thursday, May 28, at Sarginson Park; Friday, May 29, at McKinley Center; Saturday, May 30, at Mott Park; and Saturday, June 6, at the Cultural Center from noon to 6 p.m.

Residents with questions can contact organizers by emailing [email protected] or calling 810-238-5651.

For Flint, the meetings offer more than a chance to discuss park benches, playgrounds or green space. They are an opportunity for residents to help design welcoming, vibrant outdoor places that reflect the people who use them every day.
