Free screenings help Flint-area kindergarteners prepare for first day of school

Flint, Michigan – For many families, the first day of kindergarten feels like a major milestone. In Genesee County, one important part of getting ready happens before children ever walk into the classroom: making sure their hearing and vision screenings are completed and documented.

The Genesee County Health Department is reminding parents and guardians that Michigan law requires all incoming kindergarten students to have hearing and vision screening records presented to school officials by the first day of school. The requirement is meant to help identify possible concerns early, giving children a stronger start as they begin their education.

To make the process easier for families, GCHD is offering free hearing and vision screenings for incoming kindergarteners throughout the spring and summer. The screenings are available at different school districts across Genesee County, as well as at the Health Department’s downtown Flint location.

Because clinic details may vary, families are encouraged to check ahead before arriving. Some screenings may require an appointment, while others may take place at alternate locations. GCHD recommends contacting its Hearing and Vision Program in advance to confirm times, locations and any other details for upcoming clinics.

The department said the screenings are part of a wider effort to support families as they prepare children for a successful school year. For parents, completing the requirement early can help avoid last-minute stress before classes begin. For children, it can help make sure possible hearing or vision issues do not stand in the way of learning, participating and feeling confident in the classroom.

A full schedule of upcoming screening opportunities is available through the Health Department’s Hearing and Vision Screening Program page. Families looking for more information may also call 810-257-3193 or email the GCHD Hearing and Vision Screening Program at [email protected].

GCHD provides services on behalf of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. The department says it remains committed to improving community well-being in Genesee County by preventing disease, promoting health and protecting residents from environmental hazards. Its broader mission centers on creating a healthier and safer environment for all residents.
