Flint reminds families that summer youth curfew is in effect, different curfew rules for different age groups

Flint, Michigan – As summer brings longer days, later evenings and more young people outside, Flint officials are reminding families that the city’s youth curfew remains in place. The rules are meant to set clear limits for when children and teenagers may be in public spaces without adult supervision, especially at night.

Under the City of Flint’s summer curfew rules, children who are 12 years old or younger must be off public streets, parks and other public places by 10:00 p.m. The restriction remains in effect until 6:00 a.m. The rule does not apply when a child is with a parent, guardian or another adult chosen to supervise them.

For youth ages 13 and 14, the curfew begins one hour later. They must leave public streets, parks and public places by 11:00 p.m., unless they are accompanied by a parent, guardian or designated adult. Their curfew also ends at 6:00 a.m.

Teenagers who are 15 or 16 years old, meaning those under 17, have a midnight curfew. They must be out of public areas from 12:00 a.m. until 6:00 a.m. There are exceptions for those accompanied by a parent, guardian or designated adult who is 21 or older. The rules also allow an exception if the teen is on a legitimate errand directed by a parent or guardian.

The city also has stricter rules for certain large gatherings. During events such as fireworks displays, Back to the Bricks or other major public gatherings, the Flint Police Chief may activate a Special Public Events Curfew. When that happens, the curfew applies to anyone under 17 and runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

That special curfew does not apply everywhere in the city. It is limited to designated event areas announced by the Flint Police Department, giving families notice about where the tighter restrictions are in effect.

Parents and guardians are being urged to pay close attention to the rules. City officials note that adults can be held responsible for making sure their children follow curfew regulations.

The message is simple: summer evenings may be busy, but the curfew still matters. For families, it is a reminder to plan ahead, know the time limits and make sure young people are safe, supervised and where they are supposed to be before the night gets too late.
