Flint, Michigan – For hundreds of young people in Flint, summer was not simply a break from school. It was a first paycheck, a chance to build confidence and an early look at what a future career might hold.
Their work, and the organizations supporting Flint’s families and neighborhoods, will take center stage when the city gathers for one final summer celebration before students return to the classroom.
The City of Flint will host its free Summer Celebration on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the back lawn of Flint City Hall. Residents of all ages are invited to attend the family-friendly event, which will combine public recognition with music, food, activities, giveaways, resource booths and live entertainment.

A major focus of the afternoon will be the young people who participated in the City of Flint Summer Youth Employment Program. Throughout the season, hundreds of participants gained practical workplace experience, strengthened their leadership abilities and explored possible career paths.
The celebration will also recognize the employers who opened their doors to those participants. By providing hands-on opportunities and guidance, the employers helped young workers understand workplace expectations and begin developing skills that could support their long-term success.

Flint ReCAST grantees and other community organizations will also be honored. During the summer, those partners continued work centered on youth development, behavioral health, violence prevention and neighborhood wellness.
Their efforts often take place across different programs and locations, but the August gathering will bring them together in one space. The event is designed to highlight how youth programs, family services, neighborhood groups and local government can work collectively to strengthen the city.
“Our young people are Flint’s future, and our community partners play an essential role in helping them succeed,” Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley said.
“The City of Flint Summer Celebration is an opportunity to recognize their hard work, celebrate the partnerships that make our community stronger and connect families with the resources they need to continue thriving.”
Beyond recognizing summer accomplishments, the event will give residents an opportunity to learn more about services available throughout Flint. Families will be able to meet representatives from participating organizations, explore local programs and connect with resources intended to support children, adults and neighborhoods.
That mix of celebration and practical assistance is central to the event. While young participants will be recognized for what they achieved during the summer, families can also leave with information that may help them during the school year and beyond.
City officials said additional participating organizations and specific activities will be announced in the coming weeks. The celebration is open to the entire community, and there is no cost to attend.

As summer winds down, the gathering will offer Flint residents a chance to pause, recognize the people doing important work across the city and strengthen the relationships that will continue after the music stops and students head back to school.
