Michigan – Nurses at Michigan’s largest healthcare system, Corewell Health, have voted to be represented by the Brotherhood of Teamsters in a historic decision highlighting a rising trend towards unionization among medical workers. Specifically at a time when nurses’ expectations have never been higher, this development represents a dramatic change in labor relations within the healthcare industry.
Over 9,600 nurses from nine different Corewell Health system facilities cast votes ranging from November 12 to November 14. It stands out as among the biggest National Labor Relations Board elections in the preceding two decades. Though there have been reports of one of the most aggressive anti-union efforts, the nurses’ choice to join the Teamsters was resounding.
In a recent statement stressing the historical character of the election, Mark Geary, Senior Director of Communications at Corewell Health, confirmed the outcome. This vote, he noted, marks a turning point not only for the nurses but also for other Corewell Health community partners.

With the nurses registering with the National Labor Relations Board to demand a vote, the unionizing movement officially started in October 2023. Their success means they will now be among more than 57,000 other medical professionals represented by the Teamsters under their O’Brien-Zuckerman administration.
Collective desire among Corewell nurses for improved work conditions, more courteous treatment, and fair pay drove the unionization movement. These first-line medical professionals, praised as heroes, were on the front lines during the COVID-19 epidemic; but, many believed that when the pandemic faded, their employer’s gratitude and admiration for them waned.
The hard-fought unionization effort guarantees respect and dignity in the workplace as much as improved salaries or benefits. Joining the Teamsters is the way of making sure that nurses’ voices are heard and that they have the means to advocate effectively for our profession and our patients.

The new union members are particularly optimistic about negotiating a strong union contract that adequately reflects their contributions and sacrifices, especially those highlighted during the pandemic. With the Teamsters, they hope to guarantee a dedication to excellent treatment for themselves as caregivers in addition to for their patients.
With the Teamsters now representing almost 50,000 healthcare workers across the country, this unionization has broad ramifications for bolstering their position in negotiations with healthcare providers and legislators. This union growth is considered as a vital step toward bettering conditions in a field that is progressively defined by burnout and personnel shortages.
