DTE Energy Foundation and Michigan DNR offer grants for tree planting projects, $100,000 available for interested parties

Lansing, Michigan – Aimed at improving community areas by targeted tree planting activities, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now accepting submissions for the 2024-25 DTE Energy Foundation Tree Planting grant program. Working with the DTE Energy Foundation, this project provides technical and financial support to Michigan towns trying to improve their areas and counteract effects of climate change.

From its founding in 1996, the grant program has been a pillar in promoting environmental stewardship and community involvement in DTE Electric’s and/or gas-serviced communities. While ensuring that trees are planted away from power lines, the program is intended to assist projects involving local communities in tree planting activities enhancing local streets, parks, schools, and other public areas.

Another important factor is the cooperation with ReLeaf Michigan, a statewide nonprofit organization, which offers grant applicants and recipients project coordination and educational support. This assistance guarantees the viability and effectiveness of the tree-planting campaigns, thus affecting the populations in the area.

President of the DTE Foundation, Rodney Cole, underlined the need of using sustainable methods to help to preserve Michigan’s natural beauty and wildlife.

“A priority for the DTE Energy Foundation is preserving Michigan’s beauty and wildlife, which is dependent on maintaining our trees and forests,” Cole said in a release. “Preservation is made possible through the great works of our partners like the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and ReLeaf Michigan. Both have made a substantial and long-lasting impact on our natural resources.”

The DTE Energy Foundation has set aside $100,000 overall for the current grant cycle; individual donations range from $4,000. With an eye on increasing community investment and ownership of the projects, the grants notably call for a matching commitment from the recipients. Grant applications are open until October 25; awards for the grant will be announced December. Every financed project has to be finished by September 1, 2025.

This grant program is a component of a larger dedication by the DTE Energy Foundation to assist environmental stewardship and community projects Michigan. Focusing on important issues such employment, equity, basic human necessities, and environmental conservation, the Foundation gave around $16 million to almost 300 nonprofit groups in 2023 alone.
