Genesee County’s Mundy Township prepares for economic boost with Costco, several other new businesses

Genesee County, Michigan – Major development projects are under progress close to the Hill Road and U.S. 23 corridor in Mundy Township. Already well-known for its strategic location and low taxes, the neighborhood is expected to welcome numerous new businesses, including a Costco warehouse store, therefore significantly boosting the local economy.

The Mundy Township Supervisor, Tonya Keltzer, expressed excitement over the forthcoming changes.

“We’re very lucky to be home now of LaFontaine’s newest facility, Lincoln and a Ford dealership, and there will be a road going right past them where Costco is now building,” Keltzer said. The inclusion of these large stores and auto dealerships emphasizes the township’s appeal to well-known companies and their faith in the expansion possibilities of the area.

The new Costco store is a job generating powerhouse rather than only a retail addition. Keltzer projects that the store will create 500 jobs in the neighborhood, therefore greatly expanding employment opportunities.

“There’s 4.6 million people within an hour of Mundy Township. We have I-69, I-75 and U.S. 23. We have low taxes, and why wouldn’t they want to be here?” Keltzer added, highlighting the logistical advantages of the location.

A major component of the development agenda is also infrastructure enhancement. Roadwork is under progress to improve accessibility and preserve traffic flow in preparation for the anticipated traffic rise. To enter Costco, Keltzer also mentioned that there would be an entrance and exit ramp you could drive into rather than against traffic. Eventually, two to three Costco entrances off Hill Road will also help to avoid any traffic problems.

Keltzer remembers the slower times in the area despite the major advances. Keltzer also mentioned that although she feels nostalgic for the days when Hill Road was gravel and trees, she is sure LaFontaine and Costco indicate development and growth in the area. Maintaining a balance between development and the township’s “urban feel with the country appeal” remains a priority for local leaders.

The roadwork around the new Costco store’s grand opening next spring is projected to be finished in eighteen months. For Mundy Township, this is a major turning point and establishes it as a rising center of commercial and community development.
