Spring season approaches as Genesee County Parks readies campgrounds beaches and boat launches

Flint, Michigan – With the arrival of spring just around the corner, preparations are already underway across the Genesee County Parks system as staff look ahead to the return of warmer weather and the steady stream of visitors eager to spend time outdoors.

Though winter still lingers for a few more days, thoughts are shifting toward sunshine, blooming landscapes, and the many experiences that await in the county’s parks.

Behind the scenes, park employees have been hard at work preparing for the transition into the busier months of the year. Grounds are being readied, facilities inspected, and seasonal programming organized as the department works to ensure everything is in place before crowds begin to arrive.

These early efforts help create a smooth start to the spring and summer seasons, when the parks become gathering places for recreation, relaxation, and family outings.

Several well-known attractions across the park system will soon begin reopening. Fishing enthusiasts will be among the first to benefit, with the Bluegill and Walleye Pike Boat Launches scheduled to open on Sunday, April 12. The launch of boating season will give anglers and water lovers an opportunity to return to local lakes and enjoy the fresh air after months of colder temperatures.

Not long after, Wolverine Campground will welcome visitors again beginning Friday, May 1. The campground’s reopening signals the return of overnight outdoor adventures for families and travelers who enjoy spending time immersed in nature. As the season progresses and temperatures rise, the park system will continue to expand its offerings.

By Memorial Day Weekend, Bluebell, Clover, and Buttercup Beaches will open to the public, providing popular destinations for swimming, picnicking, and relaxing by the water. These beaches traditionally mark the unofficial start of summer in the parks, drawing families, friends, and visitors seeking a place to unwind during the holiday weekend.

Later in the season, one of the county’s most beloved attractions will also make its return. Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, May 23, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The historic village and its scenic railroad have long been favorites for families, offering visitors a chance to step into the past while enjoying a unique and engaging experience.

Looking further ahead, the For-Mar Butterfly House is expected to open around mid-June, bringing another popular attraction back to life. The seasonal exhibit allows visitors of all ages to observe butterflies up close while learning about the delicate ecosystems that support them.

As the Spring is getting close, Genesee County Parks is preparing to welcome residents and visitors for another lively season. From fishing and camping to historic attractions and nature experiences, the coming months promise countless opportunities for the community to reconnect with the outdoors.
