City of Flint partners with recycler to turn unwanted tires into a cleanup opportunity, opportunity to earn up to $25

Flint, Michigan – Flint residents with old tires stacked behind garages, tucked beside sheds or left sitting too long in alleys will have a simple way to clear them out later this month.

The City of Flint is teaming up with Environmental Rubber Recycling for a Tire Buyback event on Saturday, June 27, giving residents a chance to dispose of unwanted tires and receive a small payment in return. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Environmental Rubber Recycling, located at 6515 N Dort Hwy in Flint.

The setup is straightforward. Flint residents may bring up to 25 eligible tires and receive $1 per tire, with a maximum payment of $25. Proof of Flint residency will be required for anyone seeking payment through the buyback program.

City officials are encouraging residents to take advantage of the event as a way to remove old tires from neighborhoods before they become a larger problem. Tires left outside can collect rainwater, create eyesores and add to illegal dumping concerns. A buyback gives residents a practical reason to gather them up and get them to the right place.

There are firm limits on what will be accepted. Only auto and light truck tires are allowed. Commercial and agricultural tires will not be taken. Every tire must be off the rim before it is brought to the site.

The event is also limited to non-commercial residents. Commercial vehicles and box trucks are prohibited, and the program is not intended for businesses or large-scale haulers.

For residents who have only a few tires to get rid of, the event offers a quick Saturday stop. For others with a larger pile, it is a chance to remove up to 25 tires at once while receiving payment for the effort.

By partnering with Environmental Rubber Recycling, the city is giving old tires a clearer path out of Flint neighborhoods and into proper disposal. The event will last only four hours, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., so residents planning to participate should arrive during that window and bring proof of residency with them.
