Bishop International Airport in Flint to benefit from $2 million grant for key upgrades

FLINT, Michigan – A nearly $2 million federal grant has been given to Bishop International Airport in Flint to upgrade its infrastructure and services, therefore making a major investment meant to improve the traveler experience. The announcement was made by Congressman Dan Kildee, who secured the funding through the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Comprising $1,996,553, the money will be allocated to numerous important improvements inside the terminal and surrounding infrastructure of the airport. Airport officials claim that the money will help to add new gate counters, ticket booths, and information displays meant to simplify passenger contacts and boost efficiency.

Additionally, the external improvements will include the construction of a new 6,000-foot service road and an additional taxilane, which are expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of the airport. These improvements target increasing the general safety and functionality of the airport’s operations, not only on cosmetic improvements.

Nino Sapone, Chief Executive Officer of Flint Bishop International Airport, expressed his gratitude for the grant.

“The grant funds will go a long way in helping us enhance the travel experience FNT passengers love and appreciate,” said Sapone to ABC12.

Bishop Airport’s continuous support for its infrastructure became apparent in 2022 when Kildee’s efforts for terminal roof repairs brought in $3 million. Looking ahead, Congressman Kildee has presented proposals calling for an additional $4.5 million in the federal budget for 2025. Although they are not yet known, this future funding is set aside for more safety and accessibility enhancements—which are very essential for the long-term growth of the airport.

Kildee underlined the wider economic consequences of the airport’s improvements.

“By upgrading our local airports, we can connect Michigan families to the rest of the world and ensure our small businesses can ship their products around the globe,” Congressman Kildee said.

These developments will strengthen the airport’s position in regional economic development and improve the safety and functionality of its facilities, therefore benefiting both the passengers and the larger community.
