Flint secures $472,000 grant to improve rental housing accessibility for residents with disabilities

Flint, Michigan – The City of Flint has received a significant grant meant to help renters with disabilities, therefore boosting accessibility and inclusiveness. Under the MI Neighborhood Grant program, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has set aside $472,000 for the city. This funding is designated for important repairs and modifications meant to make rental properties safer and more accessible to people with accessibility needs.

“This grant is a significant step in improving housing accessibility for Flint renters,” said Ashly Harris, Deputy Director of Community Services. “By investing in these updates, we are ensuring that residents with mobility challenges or other accessibility needs can live more safely and independently in their homes.”

Program details and benefits

The money will enable a variety of renovations in Flint’s rental properties to suit the particular needs of tenants with disabilities. Eligible modifications include the installation of handrails, grab bars, barrier-free showers, and tubs.

It also addresses the ADA-compliant lowering of cabinets, counters, toilets, and vanities; it also improves access with ramps, wider doorways, and zero-step entries. Certain homes will also see indoor and outdoor stairlifts installed as well as room modifications allowing first-floor access.

The improvements also cover electrical changes required to fit medical equipment, therefore guaranteeing that all changes significantly improve the quality of life for disabled residents.

Eligibility and application process

To be eligible for the program, renters must meet several criteria:

  • Residency within the City of Flint.
  • Documented accessibility needs.
  • An income that falls within 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
  • A written and signed lease with a guarantee of no rent increase for at least 12 months post-rehabilitation.
  • Verification that the property is insured, has utilities active, and is free from any outstanding tax, mortgage, or code violations from the landlord.

Applications for the program will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis, highlighting the urgency for eligible residents to reach out promptly. Interested renters are encouraged to initiate the application process by emailing [email protected]. Further details and updates can also be found on the Community Services page of the Flint website.

For those requiring additional accommodations, modifications, translation, interpretation, or other services, contact is available through [email protected].

A commitment to inclusive housing

This project is a necessary first step towards building an inclusive community in which accessibility problems do not prevent people from enjoying and flourishing in their living surroundings. Especially for people with disabilities, the City of Flint keeps confirming its dedication to fair housing possibilities and enhancing the general living conditions for every one of its residents.
