State law requires Genesee County to create an MMPC to supervise the Genesee County Materials Management Plan (MMP) creation and application. This plan is crucial for organizing and managing the county’s waste and recycling operations effectively. Closely collaborating with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission, assigned as the Planning Agency (DPA), the committee will create a comprehensive program.

The MMPC is expected to be very important in guiding and authorizing DPA activity to make sure the MMP fits local policies and community interests. Reviewing the DPA’s planned work program, guaranteeing appropriate public participation in the planning process, and approving the MMP before it passes to the County Approval Agency (CAA) for additional scrutiny fall under committee duties.

Prospective committee members should reflect a wide range of interests and knowledge about materials management, including waste diversion activities, haulers, solid waste and recycling facilities, and composting or anaerobic digestion facilities. To guarantee a varied and complete approach to materials management, the committee also wants to involve environmental advocates, business owners, and county and municipal elected authorities.

Applications are open to everyone who fit the requirements and want to help Genesee County’s environmental resources to be sustainably developed. Through the authorized “Genesee County Materials Management Planning Committee” option in the dropdown menu on the official county website, interested parties may get further information and apply. The deadline for application submissions is Friday, September 20, 2024.
