Polar vortex brings dangerous cold and wind chills to Michigan, many schools to remain closed on Tuesday

Michigan – Michigan is getting ready for a blast of arctic air that has caused several school districts to announce Tuesday closures. The severe weather conditions, highlighted by forecasters as potentially dangerous, will give students and teachers across the region a day off.

For the whole state of Michigan, the National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory alerting of particularly low temperatures and wind chills that might cause major health problems. The projection states that the arctic freeze affects the region Monday through Wednesday morning by the polar vortex dragging freezing air from northern Canada down into the Great Lakes area.

Tuesday morning’s forecasted low temperature is expected to be below zero; wind chill values fall between -15- and -25-degrees Fahrenheit. Within just 30 minutes of exposure, these conditions make frostbite a potential danger; this is an essential factor in the decision to close schools for staff and student safety.

Officials feel it wise to call off classes given the high cold and the possibility of hypothermia and frostbite to guarantee the safety of the students. The districts are exhorting everyone to remain indoors and refrain from needless travel during this time.

The bone-chilling cold won’t let go fast; high temperatures on Tuesday are unlikely to top the single digits. The wind chill even on Tuesday afternoon is anticipated to be about -10 degrees. Clear skies overnight into Wednesday are probably going to force temperatures to drop once more below zero.

Forecasters indicate that by Saturday temperatures may exceed the freezing point, hence relief from the extreme weather is not expected until the weekend. Residents are warned until then to get ready for a protracted cold that can affect plumbing, travel, and general comfort.

Local officials are opening warming facilities and expanding hours at shelters to serve people in need, therefore lessening the effects of the freeze. Different channels of communication allow schools to keep parents and guardians updated about the weather changes and any further disturbances to the planned operations.
