Flint prepares to host high-energy rodeo weekend celebrating Black cowboy legacy and health awareness

Genesee County, Michigan – The Midwest Invitational Rodeo (MWIR) is getting ready to provide a weekend packed with exciting activities, cultural displays, and wellness programs at the Genesee County Fairgrounds. Scheduled for June 13-14, 2025, this event will be an exciting celebration of African American legacy and rodeo sportsmanship, including some of the nation’s finest Black rodeo competitors.

Action begins on Friday, June 13, with the first MWIR Golf Tournament at Flint’s Swartz Creek Golf Course. Starting at 9 a.m., this competition will provide a special mix of sport and networking possibilities with registration and sponsorship options for those interested.

Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said he was looking forward to hosting the rodeo again, stressing the event as a way to promote the exceptional skills and history of Black cowboys and cowgirls. He underlined how the rodeo motivates local youngsters and honors a long heritage of sportsmanship.

The advent of the EmpowerMENt Health & Wellness Fair, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, adds a new dimension to this year’s rodeo. A joint project with Genesee Health System, this fair hopes to highlight men’s health and wellness, hence supporting substance-free living and offering useful community services. Panel talks on wellness and mental health, interactive activities, free lunch and gifts, on-site mental and physical health testing, and more will all be part of the fair.

With a schedule of activities including bull riding, when cowboys go head-to-head with strong bulls, and bareback bronc riding, which tests riders’ abilities over eight furious seconds, the rodeo itself guarantees continuous excitement. Barrel racing, steer wrestling, and women’s steer undecorating will also be on display for attendees, hence enhancing the dynamic character of the event.

“This event is bigger and better than ever before,” said MWIR Owner & CEO Nicole Scott. “We’re bringing history, culture, and heart-pounding competition to Flint, while also investing in the health and future of our community.”

Available at the Genesee County Fairgrounds at 6130 E. Mt. Morris Rd., Mt. Morris Township, tickets for the rodeo are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the event. On both days of the event, the gates will open at 7 p.m.; extra daytime activities are planned.

There are still opportunities for anybody wishing to take part as sponsors or vendors. Prospective participants can contact Nicole Scott at 630-809-8719 for more details.
