Michigan – Michigan Medicine announced a major shift in its approach to handling health plan administration. At the end of 2025 the UM Health Plan—which includes the Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans—will stop running. This decision represents Michigan Medicine’s strategic change toward giving direct patient care, education, and research first priority.
For many in Michigan, the UM Health Plan—formerly known as Physicians Health Plan—has been pillar of healthcare coverage. For years, Michigan Medicine, the principal owner, has supervised the running of the plan. The institution has informed academics, staff, retirees, and other stakeholders that their healthcare needs will always be prioritized even with forthcoming changes.
There is no immediate impact for people currently enrolled in Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage plans. Coverage and member benefits will continue uninterrupted until the 2025 plan year. Claims for services rendered up until December 31, 2025, will be handled without disturbance.
The university is dedicated to provide a seamless change for its plan’s members. Open Enrollment in October 2025 will provide current enrollees the opportunity to select alternative health insurance options for coverage starting January 1, 2026. Retirees and staff members of the University of Michigan will still have easy access to an extensive selection of comprehensive health insurance options.

The decision to discontinue the UM Health Plan aligns with Michigan Medicine’s broader mission. The institution intends to direct more resources into its main areas of concentration by separating running health insurance coverage. This include providing first-rate patient treatment, promoting medical education, and supporting innovative research.
Michigan Medicine emphasized in a statement its dedication to helping members during the change. Well before the cancellation, the company intends to personally notify members of Michigan Care and Michigan Care Advantage directly. Teams dedicated to providing excellent customer service will be ready to answer questions and concerns, thereby ensuring members are informed and supported.
