Flint, Michigan – Mayor Sheldon Neeley has introduced a new water bill assistance program tailored to renters in a big effort to help Flint citizens struggling with financial issues. Many will find respite in the project, which offers up to $500 in aid to help pay past due water and sewer bills.
Eligible residents who rent their homes can apply for this assistance, provided their annual income does not exceed 300% of the federal poverty level. This initiative aims to close the gap left by existing water aid initiatives, usually aimed at homeowners. With a budget of $100,000, the Flint City Council has supported this project hoping to assist about 200 households.
“I understand that water payments can be a burden for many residents,” said Mayor Neeley. “My administration and I are continuously working to find ways to help ease that burden. This new program will provide renters with some relief, and I urge them to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The structure of the program is first come, first serve. Applications are taken only in person to guarantee that people most in need may quickly and successfully access the services. Those who want to apply can visit the Water Customer Service Center at approved times. Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the center is open at Flint City Hall; Wednesdays at the City of Flint Service Center at 4813 Clio Rd. during the same hours.
To be eligible for the help, candidates have to submit several documents. These include Social Security numbers for every household member, evidence of income for the past 30 days, a copy of the past due water bill registered in the tenant’s name, a copy of the federal income tax return, and, if relevant, a current DHHS Benefit Summary/Notice of Case Action for all adult members of the household.
