City officials and developers mark major housing milestone in Flint’s revitalization efforts

Flint, Michigan – Flint’s community celebrated a major turning point at Sugar Maple Farms. This once stagnant development has witnessed a resurgence of life and optimism with the introduction of new housing. Flint’s Third Ward’s city officials, real estate developers, and local residents joined together for a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the completion of nine new homes and the promise of further revitalization.

Just south of the gorgeous Kearsley Lake Golf Course, Sugar Maple Farms remained dormant for years following the sudden stop of early building activities in 2008 due to financial problems. But the scene started to change at the end of last year with the building of new homes and revitalizing the neighborhood. Along with quadrupling the current housing inventory, these new constructions have inspired dreams for a flourishing community sector.

Seeing this evolution not only revitalizes the area but also improves the fabric of the entire society. With an eye on strengthening Flint’s housing market, the project highlights a strong cooperation between governmental projects and business activity.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley, alongside 3rd Ward Ambassador LaShawn Johnson and representatives from the Flint & Genesee Chamber and Exclusive House of Real Estate, were present to honor the progress.

“Housing is such an important part of our community in Flint and throughout Genesee County. It gives people an investment into where they are, and businesses recognize that.”” said Andrew Younger, Executive Director of Flint & Genesee Chamber. “We’re so excited to see that momentum building.”

Darren Peterfi of Exclusive House of Real Estate says he’s hoping to attract either first-time homebuyers or older homeowners looking to right-size their homes. “Rather than maybe going to a condo or a townhouse, they can afford something that offers a tight-knit community right here on the golf course with great amenities close by,” Peterfi said. “It’s a really exciting day to see new development come into the city again.”

The rebirth of the project followed the hard efforts of the Department of Business and Community Services of the City of Flint to find a new developer ready to finish the abandoned project. This project supports the community’s resilience and marks a significant progress in overcoming historical economic difficulties.
