Michigan – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s administration launches an array of infrastructure projects around Osceola, Kent, Montcalm, and Mackinac counties this week. As a part of a broader effort, Michigan’s roads and bridges are undergoing significant improvements. Led by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), these initiatives are anticipated not only to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation but also to support around 468 jobs through direct and indirect employment possibilities.
In Osceola County, the focus is on the M-66 where substantial work is planned. Roughly $5 million will be set aside for upgrades to the bridge over the Muskegon River and for replacing the bridge over Doc and Tom Creek. Aiming to prolong the life of these vital structures, the upgrades include epoxy overlays, joint replacements, steel repairs, and more. Reflecting its importance to the local economy, this project alone is expected to provide 48 employment.
In Kent County, the I-96/Fruit Ridge Avenue Interchange is scheduled for an incredible facelift. The intersection will be reconstructed and enlarged with a $30 million investment, hence improving access between main routes and helping the expansion of industry and homes in the region.
This project replaces the old 1961 bridge over I-96 and adds a nonmotorized path to improve local trail connections and pedestrian safety. State Representative Carol Glanville underlined the initiative as a turning point for regional economic development and quality of life. This bigger investment is anticipated to help 286 jobs.
MDOT intends to replace the culvert on US-131 across County Drain 102, just south of Pierson Road, in Montcalm County. Aimed at guaranteeing the long-term durability and safety of the road, this $5 million project includes asphalt approach restoration and the installation of new guardrails. Like the Osceola project, this one is also anticipated to help 48 employment.
Finally, in Mackinac County, focus shifts to the I-75 where much needed overpass construction is taking place. Roughly $9 million in funding will be used to reconstruct Cheeseman Road overpasses, including deck and bearing replacements and thorough substructure repairs. Planned for over two years, this construction aims to guarantee a smooth flow of operations and least traffic disturbance by avoiding winter shutdown times.
In her latest comments, Governor Whitmer underlined the need of these initiatives, claiming that for Michigan’s economic activity and the general well-being of its people such infrastructural changes are essential.
“By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs,” Whitmer said.
This continued focus on infrastructure, without increasing taxes, underscores a significant commitment to Michigan’s future stability and growth.
